They were learning about the cow and how to milk a cow the farmers used to milk there cows on there own but now we have these machines to do the job better and faster. The average cow has at least four stomachs.
They were learning about different kinds of sheep, a female sheep is called a ewe and a male is called a ram.

They learned about what wheat and oat and barley make well wheat can make bread and cereal oat can make oat cakes and porridge barley can make whiskey.
There are all sorts of cows, they are called Holystien cows and a jersey cows and last but not least a Ayrshire cows. The farmers had to milk there cows themselves but now we have these machines to do it for the farmers now a days.

Sheep what kind of sheep are there? There are merino and dorper.

Primary 3 and 5 food and farming event

Food and farming event

On the 26th of may 2015 primary 5 and primary 3 from St davids primary school went to the food and farming event in Dalkeith country park.

Sheep & wool
To cut a sheep’s wool you need to use sheers
To cut the wool. There are tons of different kinds of breeds. The two main sheeps primary 5 and primary 3 learned about were the texel and Suffolk and they also learned that a female sheep is called a ewe and a male sheep is called a ram.

Dairy station
To get milk you have to milk a dairy cow because it give you the most milk.
Another fact about cow is of you pull the udders to hard then the cow can get angry or attack. And farmers clean the udders from the back of the cow.
How to make butter
You put cream in a plastic tub and the cream starts to form into butter. There also might be some milk in the tub. If you keep shaking the tub for ten minutes then you would have butter!!

Wheat oats and barley
To make flour you have to cut off the top the wheat and crush it.
The other way of doing it is cutting the top of the wheat and pick the wheat out of a bit of the stem kind of thing and then crush the wheat.
You can make porridge out of oats and you can make cake out of oats. You can also make beer out of barley and whiskey.

Food and farming trip at Dalkeith county park

image

Tuesday 26th may 2015

P3 and p5 were at a food and farming event at Dalkeith county park. There were a sheep bit, cow bit, tractor bit, a forest bit, tasting bit, dairy bit, SASA, forestry and cereals and machinery. We like these activities because all activities are really fun and get do lots of stuff like going in a tractor, touch a sheep, tasting stuff with a blind fold on,milk a pretend cow and learn lots of stuff about Farms. At the tasting thing sometimes you think that you don’t like the fruit that you taste but they do. There were things that help milk the cow so it’s quicker to milk them in the olden days they had to do it by hand. Not that much people new that you could make flower out of seeds with a thing that makes the thing flower in the olden days they had to use a stone and spin it round. When we were at a station some people got a tree for the school.

The tasting part people liked because people tried new things.you were blind folded when your partner picked a fruit to give you.

People learned that horse power was how many horses that the tractor would power.

I think that their learning was really good.

The classes next step is to get in to groups.

Food and Farmmg Event

Primary 3/5 Visit to Dalkeith Country Park Tuesday 26th May

When primary 3/5 went to the country park in Dalkeith they saw dairy cows, sheep, different types of wool, different types of tree seeds and different types of saplings. They got told you can milk a Sheep. They got told that if a sheep is having one lamb and another is having three one lambs will get taken off the one who is having three and given
to the one that is only having one of them. Then both of the ewes will have two lambs. All of the sheep have very oily coats. In the olden days sheep used to get shaved by a big pair of shears that will chop off their big furry coats that they grow in the summer . Sheep don’t shed in the summer they have to get there coats chopped off so they don’t
get to warm. The sheep also get taken to the butchers once the farmers have fattened them up.

Dairy cows

When they got to the dairy cows they all learned that dairy cows have four stomachs and most of there diet is grass and in the winter there is silage for the cows to eat which is just basically grass that they have gathered from the summer months and stored. Also when you milk a cow you have to be very gentle because the cow will tense and no milk will come out. The cow has a big udder at the back which keeps the milk warm and also carries it inside the cow there is big lines that goes round the udder they are veins that the blood flows through. If there is no calf there is no milk from the cow . You have to kill all of the bacteria and germs other wise you will get ill if you drink the milk.image

Forestry
When they got to the forestry station they learned that cutting down a tree is very dangerous if you don’t know how to do it. They also learned that squirrels are bad for the trees because they wreck the bark. Once you cut down a tree you need to plant another one. They also learned about loads of different types of trees and animals along with the leaves. They also learned that you only cut down the trees that have the pink or coloured dots on them they only cut down the trees to let light into the forest floor so that the saplings can grow into big trees.

The sheep was our favourite station out of them because it was the most interesting.

We learned that forestry is actually more complicated than you think!!

We thought that they could have had a pig station because it would very interesting and fun.

We think that the classes could have been better at listening because we were really chatty.

Primary 5 and 3 had an amazing day out learning about food and farming. A bit of forestry as well they saw a big machine that can cut down trees and they thought it was a great way to cut them down. There were three groups group one group two and finally group three. At the wool bit Fraser asked “can you dye the wool before you shear it”,? “Yes” said the woman “if you spray paint it first”.
